The life expectancy gap between women and men may be decreasing, however, it is generally agreed by the medical profession, that men still do not take healthcare seriously enough.
There are quite a few key elements of personal healthcare
that are working against men. Males will tend to
drink and smoke more; men do not seek the
suitable advice of their doctor as frequently as women.
Many men will define their life by their work, causing
stress. Men are also much more likely to eat unhealthy
foods, become overweight and to expose
themselves to excessive sunlight. Statistically men are 3
times more likely than women to become
alcoholics and more than four times more
likely to become registered drug abusers.
There are several major health conditions that can only
affect men, such as low levels of
testosterone and prostate
cancer. Almost all of the really major
health risks faced my men, such as heart disease
or colon cancer, can be prevented and successfully treated
if diagnosed early enough. Diseases can be identified in
the early stages by regular screening tests, and it is
important to have regular health checkups.
A major contributor to the larger health
issues faced by men over women, is that a male is
around 50% less likely to visit a GP than a woman. An
unskilled male will be expected to like approximately 11
years less than a professional woman. Overall, males will
usually live to an average of 74.6 years of age; this is 5
years less than a woman.
